Portuguese Language Lessons: A blessing Or A Curse?

Hi, my name is An..or Ana for the Portuguese.

My son and I arrived in this beautiful country in September 2022. In that short time, I have learned to speak and understand the language and I have been able to connect with many Portuguese people. I know that many of you haven't been this lucky...yet.

Did you know you don't need to return to school to learn Portuguese? If you have recently moved to Portugal, or you're planning to move here soon, you may be feeling a little overwhelmed by the language barrier, and that is completely normal! Even when you do take Portuguese lessons, you'll most probably find it pretty difficult, not to mention tedious and stressful, to try to get the hang of that very difficult language. The thing is, it doesn't have to be that way. Learning a new language should be inspiring, fun, and motivating. I for one haven't had one lesson in Portuguese and I'm very proud of the progress I'm making every day! People compliment me on my knowledge of the language and the pronunciation of those difficult sounds. More importantly, it has helped me become part of the community quickly!

As an experienced language teacher and a foreigner in Portugal, I specialize in helping others learn the language they need to navigate daily life in Portugal. Whether you need to order a coffee at a cafe, ask for directions, go to the bank or the Fregesia, or talk with your neighbors, the Portuguese coaching we offer during the Immersion Experience will help you feel confident and capable in any situation.

Many of us feel stuck because the generous Portuguese people tend to reply in English whenever we try our best to utter a few words.  And when we start in English, they reply that they don't speak the language 😂. Frustrating as that may be, it should not be a reason to simply give up. The Portuguese DO appreciate it when you give it a go, and the only thing they will remember is that you were the one who tried. However, whether you're a complete beginner or already have some Portuguese experience, there is always room for improvement, especially in pronunciation. I'll work with you to achieve your language goals.

So why combine these lessons with culture, history, and meeting Portuguese people? Because feeling at home as an immigrant is much more than understanding the vocabulary and nailing the grammar rules of the new language. It is about connecting with people, understanding where they come from, how they feel, and what they expect from us, expats. It's about a feeling of mutual understanding and respect.

The Immersion Experience is designed to be engaging and fun, with plenty of opportunities to practice speaking and listening to Portuguese. The teaching method is based on scientific research regarding second language learning and includes coaching to overcome the fear of speaking, pronunciation games, role-playing, and real-life scenarios, to help you learn the language in a way that feels natural and intuitive.
